How Laser Hair Removal Works with Dark Skin

Dark hair against dark skin presented challenges for earlier hair-removal lasers. These lasers operated on a single wavelength and required the technician to target individual hair follicles. This was difficult because dark hairs are difficult to detect against darker skin.

At Body Details, we use the GentleMax Pro True Laser Class IV. This is the most powerful FDA-approved hair-removal laser in its class. The laser combines a 1064 nm ND:YAG laser 755 nm Alexandrite laser to create a dual-wavelength beam. The laser can be calibrated for a range of lighter to darker skin. With darker skin, the laser penetrates the skin to the capillaries that feed the hair follicles. Once these capillaries are destroyed, nutrients can no longer reach the follicle. That causes the shaft to fall out and die.

Why Laser Hair Removal is Safe for All Skin Tones

Earlier laser models were suitable for lighter skin but were unsafe for use on darker skin. The technician would have to hold the laser on a patch of skin, searching for hair follicles. The 755 nm Alexandrite laser is too narrow for darker hair, which tends to be thicker. The wider beam of the ND:YAG laser, however, is wider and penetrates far enough into the skin to destroy capillaries. All of Body Details True Laser® Center technicians are trained to treat all skin tones. Before each session, the laser apparatus is calibrated to match the skin type of the patient. All of our trained technicians hold advanced medical degrees and work under the auspices of a medical doctor.

Effective Laser Hair Removal Treatments for Dark Skin

Before we treat any patient at Body Details True Laser® Centers, we give them a medical examination where we determine the skin tone and type. Relevant factors include skin tone, texture, and the location of the body. The GentleMax Pro True Laser can be calibrated for a wide range of skin types and tones. Laser hair removal usually requires several treatments, which is why our packages are all-inclusive. Once you commit to having your hair removed, you don’t have to worry about not being able to afford your next treatment. In rare instances, some hair will grow back in the treated region. Our The Devil is in the Details™ policy allows you to receive free touchups for life.

      Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

There are a few measures that you should take before treatment to ensure maximum effectiveness for your laser hair removal sessions:

      Avoid Plucking and Waxing

Even though laser hair removal on darker skin targets the capillaries, plucking or waxing leads to irritation during the treatment. Allow your hair to grow naturally for six weeks before appointments.

Shave 24 to 48 Hours Before Your Appointment

Shaving reduces the chances of skin burns below the hair’s surface. Shave two days before treatment.

Do Not Wear Makeup or Creams

Cosmetics can adversely affect the laser’s performance or cause irritation.

      Avoid Sun Exposure

The sun damages even dark skin, and laser treatments on a sunburn can lead to excessive pain, irritation, and blistering.

Caring for Skin After Laser Hair Removal

You should also follow these protocols after your laser hair removal treatment:

      Wear Sunscreen

Your skin will be sensitive for a few days after treatment. Wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen.

Avoid Hot Showers, Steam Rooms, and Saunas

Heat treatments open the pores and can increase discomfort. Avoid these activities for two days after each session.

      Avoid Cosmetics

Makeups and creams can irritate the skin. Wait for two days before applying makeup or cosmetic creams. If you have worn mineral makeup in the past without issues, you may be able to wear it after treatment.
