What Does Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Feel Like?

Brazilian laser hair removal has a reputation for being uncomfortable, as it requires a stranger getting up close and personal with our private areas. They see angles of your body that you’ve never seen yourself, so it’s understandable that you might be hesitant.

In addition to the awkward location of the body that is being treated, there’s also the fear of feeling pain in such a sensitive area. If you’re thinking about investing in Brazilian laser hair removal, this is what you can expect.

Your First Laser Treatment

Often your first Brazilian laser hair removal treatment will occur immediately after your free consultation if you agree to their pricing and feel that it’s right for you. You will receive paperwork that you must read and sign indicating your skin color, hair color, skin sensitivity, and other medical information. Once that’s complete, you’re ready for your first laser hair removal treatment.

If you’ve ever received a Brazilian or bikini wax, then you are familiar with the process of removing all of your clothes from the waist down and covering up with a paper sheet. Prior to your appointment, be sure to shave the entire area you plan on having treated. If the laser clinic you’re using doesn’t provide you with some kind of numbing cream, then you might want to bring your own.

What The Laser Feels Like During Your Treatment

Most people say the laser used for laser hair removal feels like a slight pinching or a set of warm pulses. At times the pulses might feel a bit harsh, but it doesn’t take long for the body to adjust to the feeling, making your laser session easier to manage. The sensation you feel during laser hair removal can be dulled by using some kind of numbing agent. This can be an over-the-counter numbing cream, a gel provided by the laser clinic, or a cryogenic cooling device that uses cold air to numb the skin.

If you’ve had a bikini or Brazilian wax in the past, you can expect to experience less pain than you felt during any waxing treatment. While the pubic region is certainly more sensitive than other areas of the body, most people feel that the sensation of the laser is the same all over. So, if you’ve had laser hair removal treatments done to your underarms or legs, you can expect the same level of discomfort. As you receive more treatments, the discomfort will be reduced as the hair becomes finer and lighter.

What It Feels Like Afterwards

After your first Brazilian laser hair removal treatment, your groin area will feel a soreness similar to the one you feel after a decent workout. For the first hour or two after your treatment, you might notice redness and slight swelling, but it won’t last long. You might notice that some of the hairs are shedding from the area over the next few weeks.

The next few laser sessions will result in slightly different results afterward. You might feel more of a burning sensation similar to a mild sunburn as the strength of the laser will have to be increased with each treatment so that the pubic hair can be eliminated. For this reason, you might experience other side effects like scabbing, crusting, and bruising. After your first few laser sessions, you’ll notice that your discomfort lessens since the hair is starting to thin out. Learn more about the process, check out our laser hair removal faqs.

What You Can Do To Reduce Discomfort

If you’re nervous about any discomfort you might feel during your Brazilian laser hair removal treatments, here are a few things you can do:

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like aspirin (not Ibuprofen)
  • Shave the entire treated area within 12 hours of your laser session
  • Avoid consuming any caffeine the day of your treatment
  • Make your laser appointment either a week before or after your period
  • Don’t pluck or wax the hair for six weeks prior
  • Avoid the sun both before and after your laser treatments
  • Apply a cool compress to the area after your session is over
  • Talk to your licensed medical laser technician about your concerns
